Toronto for the art lover

Light up your artistic spirit with a visit to these galleries.

Whatever the weather, a warm gallery full of colour and creative exploration can give light to the artistic spirit. Toronto is of course home to the Art Gallery of Ontario, a great place to start any visual arts exploration. But that’s not all the city has to offer. Here are five other spots to try:

The Art Gallery of York University
Located on the campus of York University at the northwestern end of the city, the AGYU is one of Toronto’s hidden treasures. One of Canada's leading university affiliated public art galleries, it is devoted to the presentation of contemporary art. As one would expect from a progressive academic community, the AGYU presents exhibitions of an experimental and probing nature. It’s known for presenting many new artists to the Canadian gallery scene and is a great place to discover young and emerging talent.

Admission is free. The gallery is open Mon, Tue, Thurs, and Fri 10:00 – 4:00, Wed 10:00 – 8:00, and Sunday noon to 5:00.

The Power Plant
Located at Toronto’s Harbourfront Centre at the base of the city, the Power Plant is one of Toronto’s most accessible and inviting public spaces. It contains three major exhibition galleries as well as smaller, adjacent indoor and outdoor . The two largest indoor spaces, named the Royal LePage and J. S. McLean Galleries, are flexible spaces which lend themselves to the presentation of contemporary art. The third, named the Canadian Tire Gallery, is smaller, inviting an intimate exploration of its exhibitions. Harbourfront Centre itself is a welcoming environment which opens out onto the lake – and in the winter you can bring your skates and enjoy the outdoor rink before or after your visit.

Admission is $5.00 for adults, $3.00 for students and seniors and children get in for free. The hours are Tue to Sun 12:00 – 6:00, and Wed 12:00 - 8:00. Admission is free on Wednesdays from 5:00 - 8:00.
