Free or nearly-free in TorontoArticle By: Elizabeth Rogers
Balance out your travel budget with these free things to do and see in Canada's largest city.
First class museums and galleries, sports, theatre, upscale accommodations and top tourist attractions... There are plenty of ways for visitors to spend money in Toronto. In fact, Tourism Toronto statistics report that the city's travel industry brought in a whopping $4.5 billion in 2007. There are some sites and events that simply shouldn't be missed, and transportation, food and accommodations will always have a cost. However, there are many free things to do and see that can help round out your travel budget: Outdoor activities The Harbourfront Centre is the destination of choice for free festivals, such as the annual Taiwanfest, concerts, and outdoor art exhibitions. Enjoy the beautifully designed gardens on your own or with a free tour, and stroll along the waterfront boardwalks. Every Tuesday during the summer is crowned with a free outdoor film. See the "What's On" section of their website for more information. There's a little something for everyone at the Kensington Market (west of downtown) and St. Lawrence Market (three blocks east of Union Station on Front St). In addition to a variety of restaurants and specialty food items, you'll find antiques, furniture, clothing, crafts and a variety of other merchants. Mel Lastman Square and City Hall's Nathan Phillips Square are the venues for many outdoor events and festivals throughout the year. Shop for local produce during summer markets and attend family-oriented events on Canada Day and New Year's Day. See the City of Toronto website for more information.
