12 essential sites for the savvy traveller

These websites predict travel fares, help you plan the best trip, find the best deals and even tell you which seat to select.

Beyond providing information on destinations and a convenient way to book, some travel websites are offering more innovative ways to help you plan the best trip or score the best deal. The sites offer all sorts of useful information such as free email alerts on changing fares, advice on which day to purchase your ticket and how to make the best seat selection.

While some of these websites are geared for U.S.-based travellers, Canadians will no doubt find them useful as well.

Farecompare.com
The site offers a comprehensive tool for flight comparisons. Airfares are constantly moving targets and the website provides regular updates and free email airfare alerts.

Even if you can't book some of the flights if you're in Canada, you can monitor fares to and from Canadian airports. The website also provides information on fare trends, as well as advice for discounted first class airfare and cheap domestic and international airline tickets.

Farecast.com
After surfing various travel sites, you've finally found the best airfare. But should you book it now -- or wait a few days and hope for an even better deal?

Farecast.com is designed to help answer such a dilemma. Touted as something of a crystal ball for travellers, Farecast.com uses historical data and price trends to forecast if your fare will rise or fall in coming days or weeks. (Note: Forecasts are available only on flights to and from designated U.S. airports.)

Here's how it works: After you enter your itinerary, the website tells you its prediction and whether to buy now or wait until later. It also displays a 90-day fare history for a trip and reveals how confident it is in its prediction. On its website, the company claims that 74.5 per cent of its predictions are accurate.

when is the travel industry going to acknowledge the increasing number of seniors who have worked hard all their life and now want to see a bit of the world while they are still able. Oh yes we are seen, but we seldom are seen as anything other then an easily tapped cash cow. Its time we we offered vacation packages that reflect OUR needs and cease being financially punished with single supplements because we choose to or are forced to travel alone. We eat less, drink less and I'm certain cause a whole lot less trouble for both airlines and hotels so why are these facts not being acknowledged in a fiscal manner we can take advantage of and enjoy. There's a goldmine out there for the 1

I certainly agree with the email about coming up with seniors travel .This is exactly the reason as stated in posted comment as seniors are usually on fixed income and every travel offer is for the working young. It would be something if someone would help ushere but dont hold your breath on this one.

I have to agree with the above poster. the travel industry is lagging behind in recognizing the changing north american demographics. The population is getting older and there are more singles in every age group including 55+. We need more information on how we can travel safely and at a reasonable cost. It is hard to find such info as travel agencies are almost entirely focused on couples travel. Yet the older and single group will probably continue to grow. Many more would travel if their needs were met. The travel industry will eventually suffer if it continues to ignore this growing segment. The biggest need is for safe, clean and affordable accommodations abroad. Most of what is a
